Beginner’s Guide to Martial Arts: What to Expect in Your First Class

Starting martial arts can feel intimidating, but with the right mindset and preparation, it can be an exciting and rewarding experience. In this Beginner’s Guide to Martial Arts, we’ll walk you through what to expect. At Hicks MMA, we ensure that beginners feel welcomed and supported from day one.

In your first class, you’ll typically begin with a warm-up to get your body moving and prepared for physical activity. This may include stretches, light cardio, and some basic techniques. You’ll then learn fundamental movements, such as stances, strikes, or footwork, depending on the style you’re studying.

Expect a friendly environment where instructors and fellow students will guide you through the basics. Don’t worry about being perfect—everyone starts somewhere! Wear comfortable athletic clothing and bring a positive attitude. Focus on learning, building your skills, and enjoying the process. Over time, you’ll gain strength, confidence, and a deeper understanding of martial arts.

Beginner’s Guide to Martial Arts:

1. What to Wear and Bring

No need to stress over gear—just come in comfortable workout clothes! For Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes, you may need a gi (training uniform), but for boxing or Muay Thai, athletic wear and hand wraps are enough to start. If you have gloves, bring them, but we provide loaner equipment for beginners.

2. Warm-Up and Stretching

Your first class will start with a warm-up, which includes light jogging, jumping jacks, and dynamic stretching. This prepares your body for training and helps prevent injuries.

3. Learning Basic Techniques

As a beginner, you won’t be thrown into sparring right away. Instead, your coach will introduce fundamental movements, such as:

  • Boxing: How to throw a jab, cross, and keep your guard up

  • Muay Thai: Basic kicks and knee strikes

  • BJJ: Learning how to control an opponent and escape from bad positions

4. Partner Drills and Pad Work

You’ll practice techniques with a partner or on pads. Don’t worry—everyone starts somewhere, and our experienced instructors will guide you step by step.

5. Cool Down and Q&A

After training, we end with stretching and a chance to ask questions. This is where you can get feedback and tips on improving your technique.
